I’m Dr. Sarah Campbell, LPC, NCC, ACS, BC-TMH, with nearly two decades of experience in clinical practice, higher education, and systems-level consultation. I specialize in trauma-informed mental health consultation and crisis response support for school districts, as well as conducting evaluations and assessments to guide advocacy for students, families, school boards, court systems, and privately contracted individuals and institutions. My work integrates clinical expertise with academic leadership—I currently serve as a full-time professor and clinical supervisor for a CACREP-accredited counseling program and have taught and developed curriculum across numerous institutions nationwide.

Through my practice, Changing Waves Consulting, I provide integrated services in counseling, consulting, coaching, forensic consultation, curriculum development, and community education—helping individuals and organizations navigate complexity with clarity, compassion, and measurable impact.

I hold a Ph.D. in Counselor Education and Supervision and advanced training in social work, coaching, and trauma. I am a trained EFT therapist, Parenting Coordinator for the NJ Family Court System, and am completing certifications as a Mediator, Board Certified Coach, and SOS DV-8 Domestic Violence Interventionist. My work is grounded in ethics, cultural humility, and a deep commitment to systemic change.

What I Offer

I offer a comprehensive range of services including counseling, coaching, consultation, clinical supervision, mediation, forensic consulting and evaluations, parenting coordination, co-parenting support, reunification therapy, reactive attachment and adoption support/home studies/post adoption reports, eating disorders, school avoidance/refusal specialist, substance use, and domestic violence intervention. I work with individuals, couples, and families facing a diversity of presenting concerns using a trauma-informed, needs- and strengths-based approach, integrating models like Emotion Focused Therapy (EFT) to support healing and connection.

I also specialize in training future counselors, providing clinical supervision, consulting on high-stakes mental health and forensic cases, and designing developmentally and culturally responsive curricula and community education for institutions and organizations. Additionally, I provide mental health consultation and crisis response intervention for school districts, and prepare evidence-based reports, evaluations, and assessments to support effective advocacy for both school systems and private clients.

My workday to the strengths based approach, tends to be shorter-term in nature, while grounded in ethics, cultural humility, and a deep commitment to meaningful, systemic change.

My Approach

I take a holistic, individualized and evidence-based approach for every service I provide and client I support —whether working with individuals, groups, couples, co-parents, families, professionals, or institutions. My practice is guided by a needs- and strengths-based philosophy, rooted in attachment theory, emotion focused, acceptance and commitment, and solution-focused strategies, with a deep appreciation of the power of human connection.

Whether in therapy, consultation, supervision, mediation, coaching, educational, or forensic work, my goal is to create a collaborative space where clients, supervisees, and/or organizations feel seen, empowered, and equipped to move forward with greater clarity, purpose, and impact.

My Journey to Becoming a Therapist

After a brief stint in policy work and youth engagement, I earned my Master’s in Rehabilitation Counseling with a specialization in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Rutgers University. My career has led me to schools, where I’ve provided therapy to teens navigating their identities, and to homes, where I’ve worked with young people in crisis. Additionally, I’ve consulted with schools to improve mental health systems, ensuring students can access the support they need to thrive.

Through all of this, one thing has remained clear: people heal when they feel truly seen and heard. That’s what I strive to provide in my work.

My Approach

Therapy should feel like a conversation, not a one-sided process. I believe in a collaborative, practical approach that’s rooted in evidence-based strategies, yet tailored specifically to you and meet your unique needs. Together, we’ll explore what’s working, what isn’t and where you want to go. I specialize in working with adolescents and adults, particularly (though not exclusively) within the LGBTQIA+ community, to navigate life transitions, identity, relationships and mental health challenges. I also believe therapy doesn’t have to be all serious, all the time, because that’s just not what life is!There’s always space for humor, lightness and simply being human.

A Bit About Me

Outside of work, I keep myself moving! I’m a spin instructor and I love the energy, community and motivation that comes with it. Music is also a huge part of my life - whether I’m discovering new artists or curating the perfect playlist. When I need a break, you’ll likely find me in nature, whether I’m hiking anew trail, taking a long walk or simply laying on the beach soaking up the sun. Nature helps me recharge, and I encourage my clients to find what fills their cup, too.

Stuart has been recognized as a 40 under 40 by the International Association for Positive Behavior Supports. He also sits on the Monmouth County advisory board for the New Jersey Statewide Student Support Services program. Additionally, he is a certified facilitator for Youth Mental Health First Aid.
